Shakespeare’s Richard 111 is a great play, but its a work of political propaganda Joseph Goebbels would be proud of. There is a different view of Richard: the loyal brother, the enlightened administrator, the brave warrior, the heartbroken husband and father, the victim of twin conspiracies, crushed from two sides by greedy rivals. The White Boar is a theatrical work in progress which is the deliberate antithesis to Shakespeare’s play. Where Shakespeare took anything negative about Richard and took it to its evil extreme, the White Boar – as a historical, literary and theatrical exercise – takes every positive shred about Richard, either proved or unproved – to create (what we hope) is a challenging alternative take on one of world theatre’s greatest works.
